This week we implemented a new weekly chores list and allowance for our son. At 12 years old we feel it is time for him to learn the value of money.
The way the new system works is my Son has a few chores he must do every day or week just because he is part of the family, he doesn't get paid for any of this work. He will also have a few chores that he can chose to do and for each one he completes he will earn a commission.
WEEKLY
All chores done by Saturday at 5pm will be paid out that week and all chores done after Saturday at 5pm will be paid out the following week. Below is a copy of the chores he can choose to do and the commission he makes for doing each chore.
Must Do Chores
- Bedroom - make bed each morning, take down dishes from his room, put away clothes,
- dust 1x per week, take down dirty clothes 1x per week
- His Bathroom - sweep, mop, counters, sinks, mirror, tub, trash
- Dinner dishes every night
- Take out trash as needed
- Popper scoop Wednesday & Saturday (Weather permitting)
- Clean off dinner table each night.
Commission Chores
- Sweep hardwood floors .75
- Mop hardwood floors .75
- Vacuum downstairs .25
- Clean the stainless steel in the kitchen .25
- Vacuum upstairs .00
- Downstairs bathroom .00
- Dust downstairs .50
- Vacuum stairs .50
- Mow lawns .00
- Wash cars .00 each
- Master bathroom .50
By not giving him an allowance for the "Must Do" chores he will be left with little choice but to be inventive and earn some extra money. The goal with this project is for him to understand money is not an unlimited resource and it requires hard work to earn it so you need to be cautious when spending it.
