If you're reading this article, then you will most likely know what a Bobber chopper is. But for those of you who have no idea what a Bobber chopper is (or even what a Bobber is), then read along, and I'll do my best to explain.
In the shortest and simplest of terms, a Bobber is a form of custom motorcycle that has had its fenders removed. At least that's what was originally meant by the term. As soldiers returned to America from the battlefields of Europe, many brought home with them the European way of racing motorcycles and cars. Cars in Europe were, in general, smaller, lighter and therefore sportier-feeling as compared to their American counterparts. The same idea applied to motorcycles from the European continent.
CHOPPER
As the former soldiers began to ride and race American motorcycle brands like Harley-Davidson and Indian, they longed for the lightweight, good handling qualities of the European bikes. In order to try to cut the weight down on the heavy American bikes, they removed everything that wasn't essential for operation. This included removing the fenders, which gave the bikes a "bobbed" appearance, hence the name "Bobber." Probably the biggest difference between choppers and Bobbers is that Bobbers always lack fenders. Fenders are optional on choppers.
Bobbers were around even before there were choppers. Choppers, which really are extremely modified or "chopped" Bobber motorcycles, really became popular in the late 1960's and early 1970's as Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson helped make them popular in movies of that era. The choppers were literally "chopped" to make them as sleek and lightweight as possible. That's why choppers look like an engine and a place to sit, because everything else has been removed, chopped off or downsized to absolute minimum size.
These days, it can be quite easy to build your own Bobber chopper. Many companies supply kits to do just this. Custom frames and other components can be mated up with common engines, hot and wild paint jobs and other stock running gear for a truly unique Bobber chopper.
