Music Software In 2001 - A Massive Step From 'Stretch And Pitch' To 'Cut And Paste'

It was only a few years ago when my sample sourcing colleague would turn up with a pile of cassettes and vinyl ready to make a tune using an AKAI sampler and an Atari ST. The first thing I would do is to try and establish the main rhythmic part, which invariably contained some sort of tuned item such as a bass line and then sample it, loop it and try and work out the tempo and key of that sample. Of course it would never be at the tempo we wanted so we'd tune it up or down to get the effect we were after, but then it would be in a different key entirely so I'd sit there with a calculator working how far to timestretch the original sample to get the tune into the desired key. The situation becomes even more tedious when you add other samples where you either have to do the same again or set it up so you could edit the sample whilst auditioning it with your bass and drums. We would literally spend an entire weekend looping 'round the same 8 bars trying to get a dozen or so samples to just sound OK together. I knew there had to be a better way...

In Use

If you're familiar with other time-grid software programs, such as Adobe Premiere or Macromedia Flash, you should feel right at home with Acid. On a basic level, it's as easy as finding an audio loop and pasting it into one of the audio tracks. You use only one loop per track, so adding a musical phrase is as simple as grabbing the drawing tool, moving the cursor to the point where you want the loop to begin, pressing the left mouse button, moving the cursor forward and releasing the mouse button where you want the musical phrase to end. Because the program keeps all the loops in the same musical key, maintains a consistent tempo and starts and stops each loop at the exact beginning and end of the measure, you don't have to mess about pushing samples about on the timeline. This takes away nearly all the tedious activities that I just mentioned.

You can download royalty free samples at any time by hitting the "Get Media" button and downloading sound packs from the web. Although this is a good easy way to get started and learn ACID, if you don't source your own samples then your tunes may well sound like everyone else's. ACID is such a doddle to use that I think you should spend more time sourcing and editing your samples as you will spend less time throwing them altogether when you are ready to compose your tune. ACID treats mp3 samples just the same as wavs.

Once you have the rough mix of your tune together you can then start playing with effects, panning etc. which are done with software 'plug-in' effects. These work well and can be edited in real time and can be downloaded from the internet.

Beatmapper and Chopper

Other useful features include a Beatmapper remixing tool that helps you add beats, combine musical loops with existing audio files, overlay samples and add tempo information to longer audio files. In fact the Beatmapper Wizard automatically kicks in if you try to import any samples longer than 30 seconds. It works well, detecting the first downbeat and then testing the rest of the track for rhythmic accuracy. At any stage in this process you can dive in there and manually point to the beat if your sample is more complex than a straight 'four to the floor'.

A Chopper editing tool lets you create drum fills, stutters and DJ-style effects to your audio files. Experimenting with the Chopper can yield some very interesting slice-and-dice effects. No matter how you mangle the audio with the Chopper, the altered loops always play in sync with your other tracks.

Audio and MIDI

This latest version supports 32 effects per track, 32 effect chains that feed 26 busses, and sample rates as high as 192 kHz. Also new is MIDI file support, including MIDI record and playback. As with the video track, the MIDI support is limited. For example, there's no provision within the program for editing a MIDI file. Similarly, audio recording is bare-bones. If you need to combine your loops with multiple MIDI or linear audio tracks, you'll want to augment Acid with a more traditional audio-editing program. Fortunately, you won't have to look far; the Acid Pro 3.0 package includes Sound Forge XP Studio and Vegas Audio LE. The boxed version also includes Sonic Foundry's XFX 1, XFX 2 and XFX 3 collections of DirectX plug-ins, as well as more than 600 music loops.

Saving and Publishing your work

The save as dialog box gives you two options: an ACID project file (.acd) or an ACID project with embedded media (.acd-zip), the latter is an excellent way to share unfinished projects with people as you do not have to provide all your wav files and their locations. You can also burn a CDR straight from ACID assuming of course that you have a CD writer! Also you can publish your work straight to ACIDplanet.com, have a look and see what all the fuss is about.

Conclusion

I like it. I have actually now decided to breakaway from my Cubase mentality and use ACID full time. I'll probably still carry on editing my loops in Wavelab because that's what I know, but I really think ACID 3.0 is the way forward. How to Get a Tactical Nuke in Call of Duty - Modern Warfare 2

I am going to describe 2 different methods for getting a tactical nuke in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. But first, let's go over some basic tips and tricks that will get you on the way to launching your first tactical nuke on the enemies.

Use a sniper rifle or assault rifle with a scope. Use whatever scope fits you and the map the best, but I recommend ACOG or thermal. Have the Harrier Strike, Chopper Gunner/AC130, and Tactical Nuke 25 Kill Streak unlocked before you enter the game. This is the most important part. You can choose whatever perks fit you, but you must have the Scavenger Perk or you will have to run out to the battlefield in order to get new weapons. Play in Ground War. If you are in a small game the enemies might not respawn (Search and Destroy), or will be less plentiful to kill. Get ready to be frustrated. Whether you get killed at 6 kills in a row or 24 kills in row, this will take a long time. A tactical nuke will not just fall in your lap, you have to persevere.

The Chopper Gunner Way

This is my favorite way to get your nuke to win the game. First you must find a really good spot that can be easily defended, hard to find/see, and bulletproof (think concrete walls). Once you rack up 6 kills call out your Harrier

Strike on an enemy infested area. This should get you a couple kills, and through sniping you will get to chopper gunner. Make sure there are no enemies around you and go into prone in a safe place. If you prefer the AC130 you can use that, but I prefer the Chopper Gunner.

Use the Chopper Gunner to destroy the enemy and to get yourself in the 20 kill streak range. Play it safe once you are his far and achieve your tactical nuke through more sniping. Congratulations!

The Hard Way

Repeat the previous way by getting a Harrier Strike and getting a few kills until you get a Pavelow. The pavelow is a powerful weapon but I don't recommend replacing it with your chopper gunner/AC130. This might get you to a tactical nuke if you are lucky!

The Giants have a great defensive line, and although they have given up a lot of points, they should be able to force Tarvaris Jackson into mistakes and turnovers. The Giants have 8 takeaways, and they should have a strong game against the 30th ranked Seattle offense.

2. Cincinnati

The Bengals are surprisingly leading the league in total defense giving up only 275 yards per game. Their solid defense stepped up to knock off the undefeated Bills in week 4, and should have an easier time against Blaine Gabbert and the Jaguars in week 5. Jacksonville has scored the least points in the league at only 9.8 points per game, and the Bengals should be able to shut them down.

3. Detroit

Calvin Johnson and Matthew Stafford are getting most of the pub for Detroit's 4-0 start, but their defense has been impressive in its own right. After starting out slow, they have only allowed 13 total points in the second half against the Vikings and Cowboys. They also had two TD's on picks against Tony Romo in week 4. Look for the Lions front to pressure Jay Cutler, who is prone to bad decisions.

4. New York Jets

It is generally not wise to pick a defense that is going to New England to face Tom Brady. However, Rex Ryan and the Jets have contained the Patriots offense better than any other team the past two years, including a brilliant performance in the playoffs last year. The Jets have been the second best fantasy defense behind the Ravens, and could frustrate Tom Brady this week.

5. Tennessee

The Titans have the best scoring defense in the league, giving up only 14 points per game, just ahead of 14.3 from the Ravens. This week they go to Pittsburgh, a team that looks much weaker than the super bowl team from last year. Mike Wallace is dangerous, but overall the Steelers have struggled to score. This one should be a defensive struggle.

Sleeper: Houston

After having one of the worst defenses in the league for the last several years, the Texans look much more physical than they ever have. They rank 4th in scoring defense giving up only 17.5 points per game. Although they are not great against the rush, if they can get ahead of Oakland early, it might force Jason Campell to attempt to bring the Raiders back.

The killstreaks in Call of Duty: Black Ops multi player mode is what make the multi player mode so special. And just like Treyarch did with Call of Duty: World at War, they added some nice killstreak rewards in Call of Duty: Black Ops.

One of the biggest changes compared to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, is the removal of the 25 kill killstreak reward, the Tactical Nuke. We are sad to see it go, but in return we get something less destructive, but very effective. The Attack Dogs from Call of Duty: World at War.

Orange County was one of the first counties established by the Province of New York way back in 1683. It is best known for West Point, an American Military Academy, and the Orange County Choppers. Orange County Choppers also known as the OCC is a custom motorcycle shop and manufacture that was founded in 1999 by Paul Teutul Sr. and his son, Paul Teutul Jr. The Orange County Choppers has allowed their business to turn into a reality TV show that is one the discovery channel. The show is called the American Chopper and made it's big debut in September 2002. The show helped rise shop to fame and now has become one of the biggest bike shops known in the United States.

The bike also has its exhaust system and rear view mirrors in the shape of jets. The reason why the United States Air Force hired the Orange County Choppers to make a bike was in hopes to reach the public. It was a promotional tool for the Air Force, but it was also great for the OCC because they got Nation Wide Publicity and has become a name around the world.

Orange County Choppers now has it's name on everything from t-shirts to key rings to the United States Air force. Even though this company has only been around for a little under decade, Orange County Choppers are still increasing their business and sales and have developed a gold-mine business. Weekly Fantasy Football - Week 1 Quarterback Picks

Week 1 features some interesting matchups for the top fantasy quarterbacks. Two of the top 5 QB's will be going head to head in the Thursday night kickoff game featuring the Saints and the Packers. Although I anticipate a great game, I doubt either Aaron Rodgers or Drew Brees will have a huge statistical night since each team has a solid defense. At least, there are better values this week.

1. Michael Vick

The only knock against Vick as a fantasy quarterback is that he is prone to injury. However, if you are playing in a one week league, this is not an issue. Vick should be as healthy this week as he will be all year. Also, Andy Reid and the Eagles will pile on the score to show off their new "Dream Team." The Rams are young and getting better, but their defense will not be able to contain Vick.

2. Tom Brady

Miami looks to be a bad team that is getting worse, and Belichick and Brady would love to exploit them on Monday Night Football. Chad Ochocinco may not still have the same burst he once did, but the tight ends Gronkowski and Hernandez will be incorporated more into the Patriots offense this year. Brady will spread the ball around and could easily end up with four or five touchdowns.

3. Aaron Rodgers

Although I do not love the matchup against the Saints on Thursday, he was still the top fantasy quarterback last year and will get his numbers. Rodgers has a great group of receivers led by Greg Jennings, and adding Jermichael Finley who missed almost all of last year will be a great new option. Also the inexperience of Ryan Grant should lead to Green Bay throwing a lot of passes.

4. Phillip Rivers

The Chargers have started slowly the last several years, but it was not for a lack of production from Phillip Rivers. Minnesota has a solid defense, but they will struggle while they integrate Donovan McNabb into the offense. Rivers and Vincent Jackson looked very sharp in the preseason and it looks like the Chargers pass happy offense will really explode this season.

5. Matt Schaub

The Texans catch a huge break going by getting to play the Colts without Peyton Manning for the first time since 1997. How does this affect Schaub? If Kerry Collins is unable to sustain drives, the Texans could possess the ball for the majority of the game Sunday. I expect Arian Foster to establish a solid running game, which will open up the play action bombs downfield to Andre Johnson and over the middle to Owen Daniels.

Orton is a solid QB who has the ability to put up really big numbers. He started 2010 with five straight games over 295 yards. He gets less credit because he is constantly thrown into Jay Cutler or Tim Tebow drama. My Dog - My Hero

It's a pretty weighty time, what with crushing economic crises and the weird weather situation. I understand about global terrorism, believe me and there's one horror after the other happening daily on this planet, not to mention the hate and fear mongering that goes with another day in politics. So maybe it's not a good time to talk about dogs but the immense popularity of books like Marley and Me and the recent Merle's Door lead me to believe that people do, in fact, want to take a closer look at a species that spends a lot of time smelling things.

Not to diminish Buddha but my dog Chopper appears to be his incarnation. There is nothing in this creature's head and he's always happy. Chopper is a black lab, a breed notorious for its distinct deficit of brains, but what he seemingly lacks in smarts he overcompensates for in loyalty and an innate sense of pure joy. Here is a dog who loves being a dog. This is a being delighted to be in his own skin and, as I mentioned, without much intellectual baggage. I watch him in awe; he's my role model. I want to be like Chopper, empty headed and filled with a happy spirit.

His name is cool but he's decidedly not and the nomenclature comes not from a Harley or a helicopter. His birth mom tells me he was hilariously fat as a pup - thus Pork Chop evolved into Chopper. He suffers the usual panoply of disgusting canine behavior involving the whole "meet and greet" ritual as well as this compunction to bite on his own rump and eat disgusting refuse. Even these behaviors have been instructive to me, though, particularly when I was in the midst of raising three teenage boys. Teenagers fight, rage, and lie. It's no prettier than a dog biting his own ass but it's what they do.

A comedian once observed that dogs have no pockets, thus no money worries. Chopper arises each morning with the complete belief that everything will be alright. Of course he's not a homeless starving cur; he feels secure in our patterns that include exercise and food but I have a feeling that even if Chopper had the bad fortune of being that starving cur he'd be optimistic about it, enjoying the adventure of dumpster diving.

In my endless personal quest for inner peace I've learned to sit zazen - the Zen Buddhist meditation form. I do this daily and have even attempted sesshin, a days-long silent retreat involving hours of sitting in meditation. Now before I get all puffy with hubris around this achievement to which I obviously have no attachment I remind myself that Chopper lives zazen. He has no problem being still, sitting around. While it's taken me years to train my endlessly chattering monkey mind it appears Chopper was born with a mind quietude that quite possibly makes him the most evolved being I know.

Why do we even bother having pets if we're not going to observe them? The animal kingdom puts up with a lot more stress than we ever do - the woes of Joe the Plumber and Six Pack (I think they're the same guy) notwithstanding. I wish we taught more about animal behavior in our schools and far less about the capital of North Dakota because Bismarck is and gets you nowhere while animal behavior can save your life, free your mind and reenergize your spirit.

Wish I had watched my pets closer during my whirlwind 30s and 40s when I was rushing to court appearances and soccer games. The dog de jour of that hapless era was Daisy, a yellow lab, equally blissful and brainless. Looking back I remember Daisy finding the patch of sunlight in any room, and stretching out in it. I remember how the sound of car keys made her jump for joy because it meant some kind of smell-fest. Sometimes she'd chase a tennis ball, sometimes not so much. I'm the human, sweating with anxiety and losing sleep and daylight to tension. I ask you, who's smarter?

I'm a little older and wiser now, "pre-tired" as they say, working my way into the last thirty years of life. My nest is empty and my wallet a little fuller - the two concepts are related my friends - and I do have some time to stop and smell the, well not what Chopper smells but the good stuff that's all around when I just quit my craziness and stop, inhale, exhale. Animals know about breathing, smelling, feeling and sometimes in the frenzy of financial panic and Second Amendment fury we are so remiss. We forget what is important and that is what's right in front of us, right this moment.

Of course Chopper will never present a ten-point plan to fight poverty and the only renewable energy source he offers is none too pleasant. "Foreign policy" to my dog has to do with how he finagles his way into the neighbor's yard not to terrorize but just to explore, because it's there. He's stretched out on the grass before me as I write this, my hero, my role model, and he's breathing in and out. Think I'll join him.

Weekly Fantasy Football - Week 2 Running Back Picks

1. Ray Rice

By piling up 149 total yards and 2 touchdowns against one of the best defenses in the NFL and the defending AFC champions in week 1, Ray Rice made a statement that he is on the short list of top running backs in the league. However, the Ravens looked to have a little more motivation last week after being knocked out of the playoffs by their rivals. I am not sure Rice can duplicate that performance, but he should put up similar numbers against a weaker Tennessee defense.

2. Lesean McCoy

Michael Vick will lead his new "Dream Team" into Atlanta against his old team in what should be a shootout on Sunday Night Football. The Eagles feel pressure to show off after all their offseason moves, and Atlanta will be fighting for their lives not to go down 0-2. McCoy had 122 yards and a TD rushing last week, and could put up bigger numbers as both these teams will light up the scoreboard.

3. Darren McFadden

McFadden looked great with 150 yards mostly up the middle in Denver in week 1. The Raiders likely will return to old form and fall apart as the season moves on, but right now they looked like a contender in the AFC West. Lost in the Bills beat down of the Chiefs was that Jamaal Charles had a solid game against a soft run defense. McFadden will be able to exploit this defense as well for a big day.

4. Matt Forte

The Bears will need to put up a lot of points to keep up with the Saints this week. Forte should be able to run through New Orleans' weak rush defense, and even if Chicago falls behind, he is a great weapon out or the backfield in the passing game.

5. Ahmad Bradshaw

Bradshaw had limited carries in week 1 at Washington. After falling behind early, the Giants threw the ball most of the game. They should settle into a more balanced attack against the Rams, who had a slew of injuries in week 1. If the Giants can get ahead early, Bradshaw should receive a solid workload to shorten the game and beat down the already thin Rams defense.

Sleeper: Willis McGahee

The Broncos are a bad team, but the Bengals are even worse. With Knowshon Moreno, slightly injuring his hamstring in week 1, McGahee may become the starting tailback against a terrible defense. Even if Moreno returns, McGahee will be a weapon in the passing game and will potentially be used on goal line situations, which means fantasy points.
