'Life Cycles' And Mark Read: "Let's Chop Up Chopper"

Hello again after a pause in my ezine writing. I have a series of interesting articles, which happen to feature Australian personalities and current affairs. The first is this story of an infamous former criminal, Mark "Chopper" Read. The reason I selected him was because one of my American fellow bloggers said she saw a documentary of his life on Discovery Channel and wondered how he would fit into my 'Life Cycles' theory.

If I go to his important direction-setting age: the mid-life 36th 'Year of Revolution' I find evidence of just such a major change, for it was in this year that he had published his first book:- "Chopper-From the Inside". This was based on a collection of letters he sent whilst in prison. This book proved to be the cornerstone of his media career and was the basis of a string of similar books, which later switched to fictionalised accounts. It led to the film and TV appearances and a national speaking tour with disgraced former detective Roger "The Dodger" Rogerson. So in 'Life Cycles' terms it meets all the criteria for this important and fateful year. After all, if this book wasn't well received, then nothing may have followed from it. You may only get this sort of break once in your life.

An interesting postscript to this story is that others have followed Read's example of writing books on gaol experiences and just as there are now laws to confiscate the proceeds of drug deals and robberies, some suggest it should include indirect proceeds, like book sales, TV appearances and the like. It seems,at least at present, that crime can indirectly pay, if you know what I mean. More interesting cases will follow and the next will be from the world of tennis.

Engineering the Mekgineer's Chopper in WOTLK

I've always lusted after the Alliance Mekgineer's Chopper in Wrath of the Lich King. They look so cool, idling outside the Auction House in Stormwind or roaring around the streets of Dalaran. Now, although you can buy a chopper on the Auction House (you don't need to be an Engineer to ride one) I decided to craft one.

So, how do you craft a Mekgineer's Chopper? It helps if you are an Engineer which, at the time I tried this, I wasn't. So I had to drop Inscription (I had reached the level of Grand Master) and train as an Engineer, again all the way to Grand Master.

To train Engineering to that of Grand Master at level 80 doesn't take that long, providing you have Mining as your second primary profession. Engineering consumes vast amounts of metals and without Mining to feed your craft you will spend a fortune at the Auction house buying metals and elemental material. It took me about a week of mining and crafting to max out Engineering and I managed to craft some cool gear in the process.

Once you have reached a skill of 450 in Engineering you need the chopper schematic. This is purchased for 350g from the Alliance Vanguard Quartermaster located at either the Borean Tundra or Howling Fjord. But here's the catch: you need to be exalted with the Alliance Vanguard before you can buy the schematic. If this catches you out (I was only Revered) try performing the daily quests at the Argent Tournament which should allow you to reach Exalted in double-quick time.

Having obtained the schematic you need to gather or buy the following materials:

Titansteel Bar (12) Handful of Cobalt Bolts (40) Arctic Fur (2) Salvaged Iron Golem Parts (1) Goblin-machined Piston (8) Elementium-plated Exhaust Pipe (1)

Titansteel Bar

Titansteel can now be made relatively easily if you have maxed out Mining as one of your professions. As of patch 3.3 there is no longer any cool down for the smelting of this metal. To make one bar of Titansteel requires you smelt:

Titanium Bars (3) Eternal Fire (1) Eternal Earth (1) Eternal Shadow(1)

You'll gather Crystallized Elements needed for the Eternals in this recipe as a by product of gathering the various mineral ores. Remember 10 Crystallized Elements make 1 Eternal.

Here's a tip: if you have an alt or a friendly Guild member with sufficient Alchemy skill you'll be able to mine Saronite ore instead of Titanium ore which is much easier. You send your alt 24 bars of Saronite which can be 'transmuted' to 3 Titanium bars and sent back to your main character. A neat trick which can save you both time and money.

Arctic Fur

The easiest thing to do is to buy is to buy this item at the Auction House. This will probably set you back 200g. Perhaps we should have taken up Skinning for a profession!

Here's at tip: wait until the Darkmoon Faire comes around and buy the fur from the exotic goods vendor Lhara for Just 12g per piece!

Rocki Ramrocket

The remaining items for the chopper can all be obtained from the NPC called Rocki Ramrocket located at K3, Storm Peaks:

Salvaged Iron Golem Parts (1), 3000g Goblin-machined Piston (8), 8000g Elementium-plated Exhaust Pipe (1), 1500g

Total 12,500g

Rocki only sells the exhaust pipe as a limited supply item so there is a chance that it may be missing temporarily.

Crafting the Chopper

Once you gathered and bought all the items for the schematic, its time to craft the chopper which is done simply at any forge. You'll then earn the Achievement Get to da Chopper!

The most beneficial bi-weekly payment option, which is a true bi-weekly mortgage payment plan, will take payments out every two weeks. Yes, they like the automatic payments - probably better for you, too, that way you do not have to worry about late payments. The first payment is half of your monthly mortgage payment, and then the second one is also half. All together, you will have paid the equivalent of 13 months of payments in only 12 months.

This simple aspect can encourage GDIers to aim to enter that board. The common names that you'll find in these boards are Tissa Godavitarne and Bear Marketing.

The first week Tissa enrolled 45 people into GDI. If that's amazing then the next week he increased his count to 135!!! Just by enrolling people these guys are making a decent clip ever week. What's more as these people enroll more people, they'll get continual income too.

Bobber Kits - A Bobber in Every Box

Bobber kits contain all the parts you need to build a bobber.  But before we get too far ahead of ourselves, the question begs to be asked - what is a bobber?  It sounds like some sort of thingamabob you use when fishing.  Well, admittedly, there is something called a bobber in the world of fishing, but the bobber in question here is the type of motorcycle called a bobber.  Why the name bobber?  Because of the way that the rear fender is "bobbed" or cut short, like the tail on a bobcat.

The bobber has been a figure in the motorcycle scene for about 5 decades now, since right after World War II.  The Second World War was a terrible event, but it showed just how connected everyone is to one another.  One interesting result is that American men in the military service, who spent time in Europe, grew to favor the style of motorcycles there.  At that time, bikes in the USA were rather heavyset and a little bulky, while European models were light, simple and minimalist.  On coming back from the war, these men congregated in motorcycle clubs.  In order to simulate that "light" appearance, war veterans cut off sections of the rear fender and some removed the front fenders completely.  What came out was what eventually became known as the bobber.  This movement was also what gave rise to the chopper subculture, as popularized on television.

Motorcycle kits are now available in the market, and so are bobber kits.  Many of these motorcycle kits are actually designed in the chopper style, with an aesthetic that matches the customization culture of bikes today.  Because choppers are more popular in the collective conscience today, it is a common mistake to think that bobbers are derived from choppers, when the truth is actually the other way around.  Bobbers were stock motorcycles with their rear fenders bobbed and front fenders possibly removed or shortened likewise.  Choppers came from the idea of removing unnecessary parts, ergo "chopping" them off, to give a sleeker, lighter appearance.  Thus, windshields, fenders, engine cowlings, sissy bars and other features outside the minimal requirements for a single rider were removed.  Some other parts were replaced, like headlights and exhaust pipes.  The exposed look, with the engine in full view and tubes running every which way, plus the "raked" front fork, and lowered central chassis became what we now know as choppers.  Strangely enough, this applied "backwards" to bobbers, which led to the current confusion of terms.  A new term came up for these "bobbed" choppers, and they are called bopper choppers.  Some say that if the front end is not changed, it is a bobber, while it becomes a chopper if the front is lengthened.  Regardless, the bobbed nature of these rides can justify them as bobbers in essence.

Fat Bastards - No Copyright Infringement Intended

One of the most popular variants of bobbers, and thus bobber motorcycle kits, is generally called a Fat Bastard.  It is unknown whether the term came before or after a certain comedy movie featuring a swinging British secret agent, but regardless there is no copyright infringement here.  So how does a motorcycle become a Fat Bastard?  The "Bastard" part comes from the fact that it is a mixture of bobber and chopper, ergo a bastard of the two.  The other part of the name, "Fat", comes from these having very chunky rear tires.  The fender-less nature of bobbers led to experimentation with wheel sizes, and that is how the Fat Bastard was born.  These have normal-wide front tires but a very wide rear tire.  The result is a very iconic look and eye-catching appeal.  Fat Bastards, as previously mentioned, are also available in kit form.  The term "bastard" is not very favorable though, so some vendors use terms like "wide tire" or "wide rear tire".  Building a bobber by cutting off parts of the fenders may not appeal to some people, and that is why these kits are available.  It does make a certain sense, since consumers probably won't want to buy their own oxyacetylene torches for just one job.  In the end, buying a kit like this can save you money, rather than buying stock and then putting it to the torch.

Bobber Motorcycle - Why the Kits Then?

So ithese motorcycles can be made by custom fabricators, why bother with bobber kits and motorcycle kits in general?  Offering these personal vehicles in kits gives some very distinct advantages.  For one, they consume less space than fully-built units, so sellers can save on storage.  The savings extend to the user, who can then use what they save on the unit cost for shipping.  Speaking of shipping, it is easier to transport kits rather than the entire pre-built vehicles, and so it is also cheaper.  Finally there is the satisfaction from doing it yourself.  There is something about having the opportunity to build something that you like and that you will use often on your own that appeals to many people.  A positive side effect is that those who build their own bikes will tend to take better care of their bikes, as compared to those who buy it stock.  Perhaps what also appeals is taking it to the next step. After buying a kit and building it up, the next part would be to attach custom parts or detailing.  Paint jobs, decals, even custom fabricated parts, these are all part of the customization culture that is all the rage with motorcycles today.  With a little more time and money, one could turn a kit ride into something unique and totally their own.  Then again, maybe you want a motorcycle for the fun of riding it. 

Taking to the blacktop on something you made with your own hands is more satisfying than using stock machines.  With a motorcycle kit like this, there is a bobber in every box for every weekend rider or hardcore chopper.  Just make sure to follow the construction instructions!

Covered Calls With Weekly Options

In the summer of 2010 the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) added weekly options to their list of available products. These work just like their big brothers, the monthlies, except that the weeklies only exist for about 9 days (from Thursday thru the following Friday). Since the time decay in an option is quickest as it nears expiration, the new weeklies make an excellent choice for covered call writers.

Covered call writers have always enjoyed time decay. They sell a wasting asset and like watching it waste away. The rate of time decay increases as an option's expiration date nears, so covered call sellers typically capture a large percent of the premium in the final week or two of the option's life.

CBOE knows this and they have provided new products for sellers to take advantage of this time decay.

Let's take a couple of real world examples from today and see what's possible.

It is Friday, July 30, 2010, and the market is about an hour from closing. We are interested in options that expire in 8 days, next Friday, August 6, 2010.

Here are two examples:

(1) Buy AAPL at 258.10 and sell a 250 strike call option with August 6 expiration for 9.35.
Your net debit (break even point) is = 248.75 (258.10 - 9.35)
Your profit if called away = 1.25/share (strike minus net debit, 250 - 248.75)
Your return if called = 0.5% in 8 days, or 23% annualized
(if not called, you own AAPL at a cost of 248.75)

or, if you like ETFs:

(2) Buy IWM at 65.20, sell a 63 strike Aug 6 call for 2.60.
Your net debit = 62.60
Your profit if called = 0.40
Your return if called = 0.64% in 8 days, 29% annualized

Now, an annualized rate of return of 23% or 29% may not get you excited. But for in-the-money CC writers who appreciate downside protection, this is pretty good. Yes, you can get a higher annualized rate of return with at-the-money options but you are also taking on more risk. For my money, 2%/month or better with some downside protection is good enough.

Week 1: The Core

The beauty of a cheerleading team is that everyone has a specific role on the team, and without each other, the team doesn't exist. Period. End of discussion. In these next series of articles, I will be sharing my expertise with you. From stretching to building muscles, you'll learn everything you need know to fly higher, throw harder, lift higher, and flip for perfection! So lets start from the top of the pyramid and work our way down!

The Flyer

The flyer is the gravity defying individual you see being thrown into the air or contorting their bodies into ridiculous shapes such as a "bow and arrow" and "scorpion" while balancing on a bunch of hands. Now would be the time that I ask you to rub your belly and pat you head while jumping in circles...kidding! Either way you look at it, these girls need to be capable of making the audiences' head spin! So if you think your ready to be a flyer or want to improve your flying skills, read on!

Cheer flyers have a duel responsibility of being flexible and muscular. There are three important attributes a flyer must have and remember when planning a fitness routine: a strong legs and core, impeccable balance and extreme flexibility. Today, we will start with the most important but most overlooked part of the fitness routine for flyers: the core. I have gotten many, many questions from cheerleaders on why they are off balance and why they are extremely flexible but can't perform a toe touch. Here is the answer to every cheerleaders burning questions on performance: if you have a strong core, you can prevent injury, touch your toes and have impeccable balance. So here it is. A how-to-build-your-core list that will have you flying high in not time!

Crunches: Start by lying down on your back on an exercise mat or the floor with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor. Place your palms behind your head, elbows parallel with the ground and face towards the ceiling. Tighten your ab muscles and raise your upper body through your shoulders towards your knees. Hold the position for a second and then get into the starting position once again. Perform in repetitions and increase the repetitions gradually as your body adapts to the exercise. Side crunches: Assume the starting position of a crunch (see above). Drop your knees to one side on the floor but keep them bent. Your body will now be slightly on its side. Place your palms behind your head and inhale before you perform the side crunch. You will be primarily using your oblique muscles to bring your body up into a side crunch. Your side will bend as your shoulder lifts off the mat into the crunch. As you are coming up, slowly exhale. Be sure that your head remains in line with your neck the whole time you are performing the crunch to prevent neck strain. Hold the position for a second and slowly lower your upper body back to the floor. Repeat on that one side and then switch sides to perform the side crunch using your other set of oblique muscles. Perform in repetitions and increase the repetitions gradually as your body adapts to the exercise. Alternate Toe Touches: Start by lying down on your back on an exercise mat or the floor with your knees bent and with toes touching the floor. Place your palms behind your head, elbows parallel with the ground and face towards the ceiling. Keeping your right knee bent, lift it while bringing your left arm up and out to touch the right toe. Alternate, bringing your right arm up to touch the left toe. Remember to keep the non-moving leg firmly on the floor. Perform in repetitions and increase the repetitions gradually as your body adapts to the exercise. If your neck hurts, modify the exercise by holding your head with your hands and lifting it up towards the ceiling for each repetition. Continue to alternate legs. Leg Lifts: Start by lying down on your back on an exercise mat or the floor with arms extended alongside the body, palms down. Keep your shoulders, head and lower back flat against the surface. Lift your legs up until they're at a right angle to your hips. Lower your legs slowly and stop within a few inches above the floor. Hold your legs there for a couple of seconds. Slowly raise your legs back to the starting position and hold for a couple of seconds again. Perform in repetitions and increase the repetitions gradually as your body adapts to the exercise. Also, start the exercise easier by lowering the legs to about a 30-degree angle. Increase the impact of your leg lifts by lowering your feet as close to the floor as possible. Super Mans: Lie facedown on an exercise mat or the floor. Keep your legs together and straight, with your arms straight and extended above your head. Keep your head and neck in a neutral position. Keeping your limbs straight (but not locked) and your torso stationary, lift your arms and legs up toward the ceiling at the same time to form a gentle curve with your body. You should literally feel like Super Man flying through the air. Hold for a slow 30 counts. Remember: don't hold your breath! Try to keep breathing steady and even. If you need to make it easier, hold the Super Man position for fewer counts and don't raise legs and arms quite as high. Side Plank: Lie on your side with your right hand on an exercise mat or the floor. If your a beginner, it is recommended to begin this exercise on your elbow. Lift yourself up to form a "plank" with your right arm straight and your left arm on your side. Hold this position for a count of 8-12. If you want to take the Side Plank to the next level, take your left hand and extend it to the ceiling. You might find it easier to hold your balance by turning your head to gaze at your left hand. Repeat with the other side. Remember to keep your body in a straight line, tightening your abs and butt muscles. No hunching forward! That's cheating! It's a good idea to start in front of a mirror to learn the technique. Remember to breathe! Try to keep breathing steady and even throughout the entire exercise.

Using Weekly and Monthly Charts to Invest in Shares

A mistake many investors make is that the longest time frame they will look at when it comes to technical analysis is the daily chart. However this chart doesn't always tell the whole story and in a lot of cases it's a lot more profitable to invest in shares based on what the weekly or monthly charts are saying.

One of the best set of indicators you can use are the exponential moving averages. I personally like to plot the 5, 20, 50 and 200 period EMAs on my charts because they are extremely useful indicators.

WEEKLY

They work well on the daily charts but they are even more dependable on the weekly or monthly charts. The key is to look for important EMA crossovers for a change in trend. After you get one of these crossovers you will often see the price continue to move in this direction for several weeks or months before it reverses and crosses in the opposite direction. In the meantime you can bank some significant profits.

You can use the EMA (20) crossing the EMA (50) as a good signal but I personally prefer using the EMA (5) crossing the EMA (20) as my preferred signal. As I say this works well on the daily chart alone but when you increase the time frame, you get far bigger price moves. In fact sometimes you can catch a trend that lasts several years and creates substantial profits.

You can also use the downwards crossover as either a sell signal or as an opportunity to go short of a stock. For instance if you look at the monthly chart of any of the banks, let's take Royal Bank of Scotland as an example, you will see that the EMA (5) crossed downwards through the EMA (20) in July 2007 and still hasn't crossed back upwards. In this time the share price has fallen from around 600p to just 20p. So obviously a very profitable long-term short position and it's the same with many other companies, not just the banks.

If you look at the daily charts, however, you will see that there are a lot more crossovers using the same period EMAs so you don't always capture these big gains using this time frame.

If the weekly or monthly chart is too long a time frame to use, then you should use them to identify the longer term trend if nothing else. For instance if the weekly or monthly chart is trending upwards, then you should look for buying opportunities on the daily chart.

The point is that you should always have a look at the weekly and monthly charts because they can provide you with some invaluable information (and trading opportunities). The trends on these longer term time frames can last for months, and even years in some cases.
